[Program Note]
Paganini’s Caprice has always been an unknown world of yearning and mystery to me, with its numerous hidden melodies ready to jump out of the page anytime. Every time I hear Paganini’s piece, I am filled with the desire to see him play. It would be appropriate to say that Paganini’s performance, which had shocked the great virtuosos of the day including Schubert, Rossini, Schumann, Brahms, Chopin and Liszt, has been in sleep after his death. Paganini’s Caprice is not simply a collection of violin techniques. It is an inexhaustible mine of wealth containing relics of the past, the music of his era, and the potential of future music. The reason I decided to work on this Caprice in a new way was because of my determination to turn this dream-like imagination into reality: I had given in to the voice of his numerous melodies endlessly requesting to go out into the world. Instead of my initial plan to use the full-length Caprice evenly throughout, I decided to select Caprice No.1, 2, 5, 9, 6, 10, 9, 13, and 24 to make a fantasia. There were no special reason or attempt for this order or selection; it was just a coincidental result derived from the most natural composition of the flow. However, my intention of using the last song of Caprice as the finale and embodying both diversity and unity with my circular theme ruling over the entire piece is reflected in this new version. The passage played by two violins is much more difficult than that of a solo and it is nearly impossible without excellent abilities, but it is richly satisfying and uplifting. It will be the most difficult violin piece out of all the pieces I have worked on so far. Caprice No.13 is written for two violins only and it can be played independently. We have made various attempts to find the appropriate balance of the orchestra and two violins, and also to interweave the sentiments of refreshing clarity and deep solemnity.
